Maria Di Miceli
As an attorney with experience working in private practice, government, and in-house nonprofit organizations, Maria’s practice focuses on organization, tax compliance, and ongoing operations for charitable organizations and other types of tax-exempt entities.
Maria’s passion lies with representing tax-exempt organizations throughout the nonprofit life cycle from formation through dissolution. Maria assists organizations with a variety of issues, including: entity formation and qualification for federal, state, and local tax exemption; unrelated business taxable income planning; private foundation excise tax avoidance and mitigation; fundraising and grantmaking; political campaigning and lobbying compliance; support organization and member organization structure; and corporate governance. Maria’s practice also includes business and tax planning, estate planning, and estate administration.
Maria joins Catalyst after working at the Internal Revenue Service national headquarters in Washington, D.C., in-house at national environmental and social welfare nonprofits, including World Wildlife Fund and Oxfam, and most recently at a large Chicago law firm where she counseled large private foundations, educational institutions, and social welfare organizations.
Maria serves on the Executive Committee of the Oregon State Bar (OSB) Nonprofit Organizations Law Section (NOLS) and is a member of the Northwest Planned Giving Roundtable; OSB Sections on Taxation, Nonprofits, and Young Lawyers Division; American Bar Association; and the Oregon Women Lawyers. Maria is an avid volunteer for prison and homeless populations as well as advocates for social and environmental justice.
Maria is a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center’s Graduate Program in Taxation, the University of Oregon School of Law, and earned her B.A. dual degrees in Political Science and French at the University of California at Davis. Maria is licensed to practice law in Oregon and before the U.S. Tax Court & U.S. Supreme Court.
Maria is most happy barefoot outdoors and once worked for a snorkeling company in Hanalei, Kauai. She engages in vocal performance and enjoys cooking her Nonna’s Sicilian baked ziti recipe for friends and family.
